This isn't MTV, We have Music Videos

I just got back from a my cousin's golden birthday. It was a blast! And, an awesome lead into the great news that both of my latest tee designs were accepted for voting in Threadless' latest tee contest. Now I need your votes to get them printed.

Threadless and Vevo have teamed up to bring Threadless Loves Music Videos. T-shirts based off of people's favorite music videos. I chose Ok Go's "This Too Shall Pass" and Kanye West's "Love Lockdown". Very different videos, but both left me with tons of ideas.

If you have not seen the video for "This Too Shall Pass" then get on it right now. They won the battle with their label to allow this one to stay on youtube to capitalize on it's viral potential. I didn't have enough room on one tee to draw out the entire Rube Goldberg machine (Actually that would have been even better to have it spread across three or four different shirts...damn!), but I was able to capture some key points and the grand finale of them being blasted with paint cannons.

Kanye's video is much different, but I found it strangely addictive. I had the idea for a tee the first time I saw it. And, what do you know? Threadless comes up with a music video tee contest a few months later. I captured some of the key characters dancing throughout the video and now have them dancing around the base of the tee while Kanye stands there awkwardly in his nice off-white suit.

Adobe Photoshop CS5

It it wasn't even two years ago that Adobe upgraded their Creative Suite from 3 to 4. So, is it worth the money to upgrade to Adobe CS5 so soon? I say no! But, it is definitely worth it to upgrade to Photshop CS5 based solely on the Content-Aware Fill feature.

I was looking at Gizmodo through some of the latest and greatest, and stumbled across this sneak peak of the most amazing feature EVER. Words just don't do justice, so here is the video. Throw on a hat, because your head might explode!

Havaianas & Threadless

It took a bit longer than I expected, but my latest Threadless submission was approved for voting. It does require a Threadless membership to vote, but the account is free and there is no spam.

Update Accomplished

I sketched. I planned. I Photoshopped. I developed. I tested. I am sick of coding.

I just finished updating the last XML file for one of the two simpleviewer galleries showing off my years producing seed catalogs and making corn sexy. It feels good, but I kind of think I might create a welcome page instead of just throwing the potential client straight into my portfolio. Just an idea because of some good reviews I received on the cluster of images in my last post. That could make a snazzy splash page, buuuuuuuuuuut I don't know if I want/need a splash page.

Regardless, I am done for now. I need a break from code. Check out www.andreweberwine.com and let me know what you think. Or get a hold of me if you're in need of some grade A design. For now, time to finish some tee designs.

Website Update

I know I just said I was finishing up some projects, but I have put all of those on hold.

Since parting ways with Ag Printers last month, I have been searching for a career. One of those jobs that you love so much it can't really be called work. Unfortunately, I have been a bit disappointed with the responses (or lack there of) to the positions I have applied for. I am taking it as a hint that I might need to repackage myself to make the sale. So, I have decided to revamp my website. I am excited about the improvements I am making. Thus, I just realized it is almost 4AM and I am still plugging away in Dreamweaver. I need to get some sleep, so I am fresh for an interview tomorrow, but I am excited about my progress and wanted to share. Here is a little taste:

It should be done before the end of the month. Just in time to finish up my tee designs for the Threadless and Havaianas deadline of April 4th.

Life on the Open Sea

It is definitely a different lifestyle. And, it is quite interesting to see a yacht going down the Tennessee River. Even stranger to help navigate it down the river.

My last three weeks were not quite as glorious as Andy Samberg made it sound. Then again I was working as a deck-stew instead of rapping with T-Pain. I learned a lot about the industry and the grueling work that goes on behind the scenes. The hours were chaotic, the work was exhaustive but I love every minute of it. Well, maybe not love, but the open see agreed with me...I enjoyed my time.

Since then I have been working on a lot of different projects. Design and domestic. A poster for The Longest Day of the Year, some wedding pieces and a few t-shirts for Threadless and Havaianas. Also, I am becoming quite handy with wood filler.

A Dog and the Backyard

I just deposited the check for my first real freelance project. Not that the projects for my family weren't real, but they weren't real. A Kokomo company is changing their name and wanted a new identity. The owner wanted to use a scanned photograph, but decided we should find a different idea after we talked about resolution, raster, vector, stuff.

I was still excited about the wi-five tee design, so I thought I would approach this the same way. I took a handful of photos of Steiner, the family dog, and sketched up some ideas.

We went through a handful of revisions and landed on two versions of the logo and company name. It might be too detailed to be considered a logo, but my client is happy and I am proud of the design. So, call it what you will. Davis' Backyard now has a new face to go along with the change in name.

No Rest for the Wicked (or designers)

I have a pretty full plate right now. I am still waiting for the final results of the Threadless t-shirt contest, balancing my workload at Ag Printers and the projects my boss adds to my list for no apparent reason, finishing up a company identity for a client, cleaning up the code of my portfolio (www.AndrewEberwine.com), putting together ideas for that little wedding I have next year, playing with another t-shirt design for a friend/wingman and trying to remember to eat and sleep somewhere in the breaks. As soon as I find some free time, I will expand on some of these great projects I have going on right now.

Tee design on Threadless

Why have I not posted this already?! I submitted a design to Threadless last week for their Threadless <3's contest. Trying to set the new trend for "$10K in 2K10". I have already received some great feedback on the concept, but a few are not a fan of the style. I believe Threadless shirts are normally more Flash-esque than antique, comedic art. So, my style isn't completely a fan favorite.

There are only 5 days left in the contest, so check out the design and vote. You will be asked to register for your vote to count, but there has no spam nor strings attached in the year that I have been a member.

Note to Self: Charge Battery

I wanted to make something of this frigid day, so I grabbed my camera & new tripod and took off. It wasn't until I found a spot that I realized I had barely any battery life left from the holidays. I was able to get some test shots in, but that was all. So remember, check your battery life before walking out the door.

Luckily, this weather isn't going anywhere soon, so I tomorrow should still be a great day to photograph. At least the dog enjoyed the car ride and locations. Not quite sure what would have ensued if I had let him out to play with these guys. Maybe we will get the chance tomorrow. Until then, have a good one and stay warm!

Hey, remember the 80's

This is one of the most creative collections I have seen in awhile. I love everything about it. The medium. The content. Ingenious! Technology is becoming older faster these days, and what a great way to symbolize that. Fossilize them!

Andrew and the Amish

It only took 5 months, but the Byron Seeds 2010 Resource Guide is done. Printing right now as I type waiting on the next press check lined up. Everything looks great and right on schedule...3 months late.

Working with the Amish has been a unique experience. Especially working with an Amish company that has partnered with non-Amish companies. Some of their rules change when the Amish enter the business world. I still laugh that we had to upgrade to a color fax, so that we were as technologically savvy as those Amish boys. Their color fax sits nicely under an oil lantern in their office.

They may work harder and longer hours, but it feels like they just sit there spinning their wheels when it comes to making a decision. Impressive I know, horse-drawn carriages are hard to burnout in. This book should have gone to print near the end of October, but the revisions never stopped and wouldn't have it I didn't give them a final print date. I had already rescheduled the print date twice and I did not want to carry this into the next year. At this rate I will never have any free time to work on my own designs. Or the desire to touch a computer outside of the office. Occasionally, I loathe technology because of the Amish. Bass ackwards, right?

So, the Amish are the reason I haven't finished my site yet. Really, I haven't been able to work on it at all since I claimed that it was almost done. My new, realistic goal is to have to site live by the end of January. We'll see how that goes.

Another Abduzeedo Tutorial

I am a big fan of Abduzeedo. Especially their tutorials; lots of great treasures to add to my Photoshop arsenal. I just updated my HP Tx2500Z with Windows 7. Goodbye & good riddance to Vista! I still haven't had too much extra time to play around with it, but it's pretty damned cool so far. Anywho, I needed a new wallpaper, so I decided to look to Abduzeedo for some inspiration.

Now I have an beautiful, inspirational piece as my background, and I get so see Kelsey's smile everyday.

I added Kelsey's face in the lines for a touch of personalization. Not much I know, but I created it for myself. Just thought I would share. Here is a link to the tutorial. My wallpaper is below. Have a good one!

Kelsey & I were fortunate enough to take a short vacation before Ag Printers' busy season. Where should we go? Dave Matthews Band opens their tour in NYC. So, I guess we are going to the Big Apple. Yup!

April 11-13, 2009 | We don't talk about the 14th

It was much needed and appreciated. It was the first vacation Kelsey and I had taken together and it was great! There was a lot of walking involved. We visited (I met for the first time) Kelsey's cousin and his wife. Also, got to meet some of her DMB family. I still cannot believe the distances and troubles these people go to for a concert. The Roots did open though...I was sold then and there.

Anywho, I took tons of photos (a.k.a. played with Kelsey's camera a lot). Only time we actually stopped to to snap a shot was atop Rockefeller Center. Awesome view. An album with some of the photographs is posted on flickr.

AWESOME DIGITAL BOKEH EFFECT IN PHOTOSHOP

I think I originally found this in November 2008. A tutorial by Fabio Sasso showing how to use Photoshop to recreate a bokeh effect he initially created in Pixelmator. I love this style and had to play with the tutorial. In the end, I turned it into a generic wallpaper for Ag Printers interns (link).

"Our last Wallpaper of the Week was an image I had created using Pixelmator, and I really liked the outcome. The best part about it was that it was pretty easy to accomplish in Pixelmator, but I decided for perspective's sake to create the same effect in Photoshop. The process is easy as well, but with a few extra steps." (read more)
